The Cows Come in for Winter at Solsgirth Home Farm
As the seasons change and autumn gives way to winter, it's time for the cows at Solsgirth Home Farm to leave the fields and come in to settle into their cosy barn for the colder months ahead.
Our Aberdeen Angus and Blue Grey cattle are making their way home, with our two trusty farm dogs, Pip and Fly, on hand to help keep everyone in line along the way! They take their jobs very seriously and are never far from the action.
A little about our Blue Grey cattle.
Our Blue Grey cattle have a particularly interesting history and are a lovely part of traditional British farming heritage. Blue Greys originated from crossing a Galloway cow with a Whitebred Shorthorn bull. This traditional cross dates back to the mid-19th century and became especially popular in the Scottish Borders and northern England. They are easily recognised by their beautiful blue-grey, mottled coats, which give them their name. They are also well known for their hardiness and ability to thrive in the tougher conditions of upland farming.
The Galloway influence brings hardiness and good maternal qualities, while the Shorthorn influence contributes to their beef qualities. A lovely combination that has made them an important part of farming history in this part of the world.
Settling in for winter.
After spending the warmer months out in the fields, it's now time for everyone to settle into their winter routine. Cosy beds, plenty of care and attention, and lots of familiar faces will keep us busy over the coming months.
There's always plenty happening on the farm, and the change of seasons brings its own jobs and routines.
We've captured some lovely moments of the cows making their way in, along with Pip and Fly keeping a watchful eye on proceedings.
We hope you enjoy this little glimpse into life at Solsgirth Home Farm and seeing our Aberdeen Angus and Blue Grey cattle heading home for winter.
Now it's time to get everyone settled, cosy and comfortable until spring comes around again!
Welcome home, everyone!
